ARIES

Grottaglie may not be the loudest of Pugliese towns–that award goes to the likes of Ostuni and Polignano a Mare–but it packs a punch in architecture, artisanship, and history. Aries, too, at first may not leave much of an impression… but they’re certainly not lowkey. These rams have a vibrant internal monologue–they’re very self-focused, but not selfish!–that easily bursts at the seams. Grottaglie’s name is derived from the Latin word “grotta”, meaning cave, which alludes to the natural caves that were once used as kilns for firing ceramics, and it’s this that the town is most known for. Also known as the “City of Ceramics”, Grottaglie is full of artisans who use local clay for majolica, terracotta, and tin-glazed pottery. Ceramic ovens are found all over town–as fiery as these fire signs, driven by an energetic spirit that propels them to take on challenges head-on. However, beneath their robust and assertive exteriors lies a more delicate and sensitive side to Aries. Despite their strong and independent nature, they possess a deep emotional depth and vulnerability that often surprises those who only see their tough exterior. Like a ceramic, treat Aries with care–for their shards can cut even deeper than those of china.

TAURUS

These salt of the earth signs are a perfect fit for the Puglian place that makes bread of the earth: Altamura. Made from durum wheat semolina and baked in wood-fired ovens, this rustic bread, Pane di Altamura, holds the prestigious Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status and is the it-girl of Pugliese carbs. Traced back to the first-century BC poet Horace, who praised it as “the best by far,” the bread was a symbol of prosperity for the fine grains used in its production–uncomplicated with a twist of luxe, just like these earth signs. Practical Tauruses believe in enjoying life’s pleasures, but also understand the importance of grounding themselves in simplicity and authenticity; they know how to appreciate the richness of life in all its forms! Grounded Altamura certainly is too, for reverence for the town’s roots is of utmost importance here. The tradition of breadmaking in Altamura has been safeguarded over the centuries, with a ban on private ovens in the Middle Ages ensuring consistency and quality, and the medieval old town is well-preserved with historic churches and elegant palaces. The majestic Altamura Cathedral, for example, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is a prime example of Romanesque architecture and a must-visit for history enthusiasts (keep an eye out for the aforementioned bread on its portals too!). All in all, Altamura is a town with a Taurean dose of resilience.

GEMINI

Santa Maria di Leuca is characterized by dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear turquoise waters, hidden coves and grottoes, and panoramic views of both the Ionian and Adriatic seas, which converge at the Punta Meliso promontory, marking the southernmost point of the Italian mainland. These two currents create a sea as restless as a Gemini; easily bored, they’re always seeking new experiences and challenges to keep them engaged and stimulated. Santa Maria di Leuca is a town that moves with the whims of the season: in summertime, the restaurants’ tables are as full as the spiaggia pubblica, while come winter, the town empties out for more northerly climates. Its rhythm clearly matches that of these air signs and their famous duality: one side is warm, outgoing, and sociable, and the other is more reserved, introspective, and analytical. In summer, the Feast of Santa Maria di Leuca, held on August 15th, features religious processions, fireworks, live music, and traditional folk dances–a party fit for a Gemini. These twins love to party, and you can often find them leading the dance floor (in Puglia, the tarantella), cracking jokes, and ensuring everyone is having a good time.

CANCER

While Cancers are nurturing and protective by nature, they can also be quite guarded and protective of their own emotions and vulnerabilities. These crabs tend to build emotional walls around themselves as a form of self-protection, and it can take time for them to fully open up and trust others. What better than the walled city of Monopoli (hold the board game jokes)? The defensive walls of Monopoli were constructed primarily during the Middle Ages, stretching for several kilometers and encircling the historic center of the town; they’re punctuated by several fortified gates, watchtowers, and bastions, which served as key defensive points and lookout posts. It’s not all rigid, though! These walls create a picturesque backdrop against the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea, and visitors to the town can stroll along the top of the walls, enjoying panoramic views of the town, the sea, and the surrounding countryside. Cancers too, behind their hard shells, hide soft, soft hearts. These water signs value security and stability, and they often create warm and welcoming home environments that serve as a sanctuary for themselves and their loved ones. Monopoli feels exactly like one of these safe havens, with fishermen going through their daily catches along the harbor, sandy beaches perfect for snorkeling, and waterfront restaurants dishing out coastal comfort classics.

LEO

Leos know how to leave an impression. So does Polignano a Mare. Twenty-meter-high limestone cliffs that plunge directly into crystalline waters with whitewashed houses perched precariously on their edges–like these fire signs, Polignano is dramatic! It’s passionate! It’s glamorous! These lions love a stage, and, in recent years, Polignano’s cliffs have been exactly that: the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series sees contestants twirl and whirl from preposterous heights into the sea below. The energy of a Leo is positively magnetic (which is why you often have your best nights out with them); Polignano too draws tourists from all over and, in 110 AD, snagged the attention of Emperor Trajan, who ordered his Via Traiana to go through the town. (You can find a bridge, remains of the thoroughfare, at Lama Monachile.) The locals of Polignano are as prideful as a lion when it comes to their most famous export: Domenico Modugno, singer of the international smash hit “Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu”, colloquially known as “Volare”. There’s certainly lots of blu to go around here in Polignano!

VIRGO

Virgos and Martina Franca–a match made in meticulous heaven! Virgos, with their notorious attention to detail, would have a field day in this jewel of a Puglian town–clean, well-kept, and blindingly white. Despite the miniature size of the 50,000-large Martina Franca, the formerly prosperous town boasts over 20 elegant palaces (don’t miss the 17th-century Palazzo Ducale!) and 15 churches (the Basilica di San Martino might be the most splendid); these earth signs could spend hours scrutinizing the intricate designs featured in the Baroque facades of the latter. Hardworking and practical Virgos are very conscientious when it comes to money, and the same could be said for Martina Franca. Though the town’s roots date back to prehistoric times, it really took off in 1310, when Philip of Anjou bestowed tax-free status, turning Martina Franca into a longtime commercial capital of the area. Virgos are ever the modest ones, and Martina Franca too is often passed by for its more lauded and flashy neighbor Alberobello–though Virgos and Martina Franca should not go unappreciated!

LIBRA

Cute, charming, agreeable–all adjectives you could use to describe both Trani and a Libra. The Puglian town as we recognize it today blossomed between the 11th and 13th centuries, when its prime location on the Adriatic Sea made it a key launching pad for the Crusades and a bustling hub of trade. This drew numerous families from Italy’s prominent Maritime Republics, fostering strong diplomatic ties with Venice, Genoa, Pisa, and Amalfi. Ruled by Venus, the planet of beauty and harmony, Libras have a natural inclination towards peacekeeping and maintaining balance in relationships and situations. With a keen sense of fairness and justice, Libras often see multiple perspectives and find middle ground in conflicts; these air signs would’ve been perfect inhabitants of ancient Trani! Libras often enjoy surrounding themselves with beauty, whether it’s in their clothing, home decor, or even their social circles, and aren’t afraid to show it off every once in a while. The same is true in little Trani, which boasts more than a few architectural marvels, among them the cathedral and Emperor Frederick II’s castle. The former stands beside the Adriatic Sea with its creamy white limestone and impressive Romanesque proportions, plus a rose window and bronze doors, while the latter emerges straight from the sea with waves lapping at its walls; sturdy towers at each corner round out the picture–perfectly balanced architecture that satisfies Libra’s inclination for the aesthetically pleasing.

SCORPIO

Arriving in Otranto, one would never know it was the sight of one of Puglia’s most ghastly attacks; it’s like a Scorpio, which guards its secrets closely. If you know where to look in Otranto, or how to respect a Scorpio, however, you’ll get to their hearts. The Aragonese Castle of Otranto is this city’s scorpion shell and one of the most prominent defensive structures in the town. Built by the Aragonese in the 15th century, the bastion-heavy castle was designed to protect the town from invasions and pirate attacks. In 1480, however, the defenses failed when a large Ottoman army led by Sultan Mehmed II besieged Otranto, resulting in a brutal massacre. But like a Scorpio, the city laid in wait to sting back, and the Pugliesi repelled future Ottoman attackers in 1537. Just like Otranto, Scorpios are incredibly resilient and strong-willed, possessing an innate ability to overcome challenges and adversity. They often emerge from difficult situations stronger and more determined than before, as did Otranto, whose walls have been reinforced with towers, ramparts, and moats, creating a formidable barrier that can be seen today. Just as Otranto locals refused to abandon their city despite numerous sieges, Scorpios are fiercely loyal and protective of their loved ones, willing to go to great lengths to defend and support those they care about. If you ask us, Scorpios make some of the most devoted partners, friends, and family members.

SAGITTARIUS

Imagine this: panoramic views that reach past wide plains of olive trees all the way to the azures of the sea. Numerous hiking and cycling trails wind through the lush greenery, and just a hop, skip, and a jump away is the Bosco delle Pianelle Nature Reserve; paths meander through dense oak and chestnut forests, home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, wild boar, and a variety of bird species. This is Selva di Fasano, the adventurous Sagittarius’ dream (which also has great examples of trulli, offering a pleasant alternative to the overrun Alberobello). These always-active fire signs value, above all else, freedom, and the wilderness and expansive views here offer exactly that. Sagittarians are natural risk-takers who are not afraid to push their limits, and we can see them bombing through the forests on bikes or climbing up rocky impasses here. Some call Selva di Fasano the California of Puglia, and we dare say it’s just as balmy. Sagittarians are known for their optimistic and positive outlook on life, and the warm Mediterranean climate, stunning scenery, and relaxed pace of life in Selva di Fasano would certainly resonate with their upbeat and sunny dispositions.

CAPRICORN

These hard workers find their match in the most industrious of Puglian cities: Bari. The regional capital has a long and storied history that dates back to ancient times–thanks, primarily, to its port, one of the oldest and most important in all of the Adriatic. A bustling maritime center frequented by Greek, Roman, and Byzantine ships, the port later played a crucial role in the Crusades, serving as a departure point for Christian armies heading to the Holy Land and a gateway for pilgrims and merchants traveling to and from the East. Ruled by Saturn, the planet of structure, discipline, and perseverance, Capricorns are known for their practical approach to life, meticulous attention to detail, and unwavering commitment to success. Unsurprisingly, they’re natural leaders, and we can totally see this zodiac sign at the bow of a boat, navigating their team through the waters, no matter how choppy. Despite their reputation for being serious and businesslike, Capricorns have a deeply sensitive and compassionate side–as does this city. Spend a few hours wandering the labyrinth of narrow cobblestone streets in Bari Vecchia, pop into a forno for a fluffy slice of focaccia barese, meet the nonne rolling orecchiette in the street, and you’ll know exactly what we mean.

AQUARIUS

Taranto, located on a peninsula between the Mar Grande (Big Sea) and the Mar Piccolo (Small Sea), is a complicated city, to say the least. Ruled by various civilizations, including the Romans, Byzantines, Normans, and Spanish, over the centuries, Taranto’s historical center reflects this rich heritage in architecture, culture, and tradition. Today, however, Taranto is most known for its steelworks and shipbuilding industry, which has been central to its economy since the 20th century, but has brought along a whole host of environmental and humanitarian issues. However, Aquarians love to subvert stereotypes, and so does Taranto. In recent years, the coastal city has been home to such a vibrant cultural scene, with so many museums, art galleries, and festivals that it’s been nicknamed the “City of Festivals”. Aquarius equates to innovation, progressiveness, and a strong sense of community and social justice. With their forward-thinking approach and willingness to challenge the status quo, these air signs are pros at bringing people together for a common cause; they would fit right in in Taranto, organizing new galas and celebrations, advocating for the factory area’s redevelopment, and mobilizing locals to speak up for their city’s future. These water bearers, after all, are humanitarians at heart!

PISCES

Nicknamed the “Florence of the South”, Lecce is as dreamy as these water signs. Lecce is a city that resonates deeply with Pisces’ whimsical and artistic sensibilities, especially when it comes to the beautiful Baroque architecture. Intricate carvings, ornate decorations, and soft, golden hues make this town feel like a fairytale worthy of the Pisces imagination; prime spots for daydreaming include the Basilica of Santa Croce, Piazza del Duomo, and the Roman amphitheater, which dates back to the 2nd century AD. In addition to its architectural splendors, this Puglian city is renowned for its vibrant cultural scene, with numerous festivals, art exhibitions, and musical events taking place throughout the year. Pisces, ruled by Neptune, the planet of inspiration and imagination, is inherently creative, and they have a knack for sensing the subtle nuances and hidden meanings in their surroundings, which enables them to produce work that is both insightful and thought-provoking. Because of this, their environment and the energies of those around them can either fuel their creativity or hinder their artistic flow; Pisces thrive in supportive and nurturing environments where they feel free to express themselves without judgment or criticism. Lecce is certainly one such place!
