Chalet del Sogno
A Cozy Cabin Getaway in the Dolomites
Winter opening: December 5th, 2024 – April 13th, 2025
Summer opening: June 8th - October 5th, 2025
“Chalet del Sogno” literally translates to “Hotel of Dreams”–and we could’ve just left the description of this hotel amidst the Brenta Dolomites of Trentino-Alto Adige at that. Staying here feels like staying at your cool family friend’s mountain cabin… if their cabin had five stars and was smack dab in the middle of a natural park. This extraordinary mountain guesthouse was built in 2006 by Domenico and Myriam Schiavon, whose family, Madonna di Campiglio locals since the 70s, continues to reside on the top floor.
Upon arrival at the locally-sourced wooden doors, you breathe in not only fresh mountain air, but also that sense of familial warmth. The hotel is currently managed and operated by Domenico and Myriam’s son, Alberto, and hospitality is his specialty. More than an exceptional hotelier, Alberto is a patriot of the Dolomites, grounding nearly everything about the hotel to the region. The cozy mountain lodge was built according to the principles of bio-architecture and uses locally sourced wood, wool, and stone. The family’s commitment to sustainability is apparent, especially on those chilly winter days when the hotel is entirely heated with geothermal energy. The Schiavons designed the three-story hotel to feel at one with the outdoors: the hotel’s color palette is based on native flowers, the alpine decor hints at indigenous flora and fauna, and each of the 18 guest rooms has its own fragrance and color hues depending on the local wood used.
The Schiavons’ enthusiasm for their region is infectious, and it doesn’t take long for you to fall in love with the surroundings too. Nestled between the Adamello-Brenta Natural Park–the largest protected area in Trentino–to the west and the Brenta Dolomites–a UNESCO World Heritage Site–to the east, Chalet del Sogno has no shortage of natural beauty or ways in which to access and appreciate it. All summer, the hotel organizes scenic hikes, mountain climbs, e-bike tours, canoeing trips, fishing expeditions, and horseback rides, and Alberto often leads the excursions himself. In winter, the hotel transforms to a ski-in-ski-out lodge (the lobby is 25 meters from a ski lift) with access to 156 km of slopes on four peaks–and that includes the legendary 3Tre world cup stadium. (Those who aren’t big on skiing or hiking shouldn’t miss riding the ski lift up to the peak anyway: there are some fantastic mountain huts where you can taste the best of Trentino cuisine with expansive views.)
Although there is plenty to discover outside, there’s much to do within Chalet del Sogno’s walls too. The Oasi del Sogno spa is full-body restorative, and their contemporary fine-dining establishment, Restaurant Due Pini, is phenomenal. For more on the local cuisine, the hotel organizes visits to the nearby farms and producers that supply their restaurants.
It is these things, but also the little ones–settling into the stube after dinner with local grappa, dining al fresco on the terrace against a stunning backdrop of the Dolomites–that make this chalet the stuff of dreams. And throughout any season and whatever your daily pursuits–active or otherwise–a stay at Chalet del Sogno is a surefire way to connect with the majesty of the surrounding Dolomites, its culture, and its foods.
A few segreti (secrets) from Alberto and his family:
Lorenzi Snc – In business for a century, this internationally known, family-owned shop produces handmade, stunning knives and cutlery, as well as other household items made from deer antlers, antelope horns, wild boar tusks, and other natural materials found foraging in the forests of Trentino.
Malga Mondifrà – This local dairy farm produces some of the best butter and cow’s milk cheeses in the area. Pick up a few products and bring them home for a true taste of Trentino.
Stile Alpino – If you need any clothing for your mountain treks and activities (or if you have a penchant for dressing mountain chic), head to this exceptional store in the center of town.
And, while you’re in Madonna di Campiglio, make sure to try homemade tagliatelle with duck ragù, corniole (the juicy fruit of the Cornelian cherry tree), and stravecchio di malga (an aged, raw cow-milk cheese).
