Borgo della Marmotta
If heaven is a place on earth, then BINGO, we think we’ve found it. Better yet, it’s a place for all to stay and all to enjoy. Set in the ‘green heart’ of Italy, surrounded by rolling hills and verdant land for as far as the eye can see, we welcome you to this Umbrian Utopia: the fabulous Farm Resort of Borgo della Marmotta.
With breath-taking views overlooking the Spoleto Valley and onto the hills of Montefalco, the 17th century hamlet is perched as a hidden treasure just outside the ancient village of Poreta. Further sequestered by high-stone walls, the Borgo is part of the 180-acre Terre di Poreta Estate which has been in the noble and even papal hands, under Pope Leone X11, of the family della Genga for centuries past. Today’s current descendants, Filippo and his brother Federico, have taken the reins and run Borgo della Marmotta as a heartthrob of a hotel, where the charm of rustic country living is met with all the splendour of a luxury retreat.
The accommodation, just as its surroundings, is wonderfully unobtrusive, collected and calm. The gentle landscape and that certain ethereal quality to the Umbrian light set the tone of the design within. The near twenty rooms, suites and apartments, spread amongst the hamlet’s cluster of houses (once stables, granaries, sheepfolds and mills), are styled with impeccable natural grace. Walls white-washed with organic pigments, rust-coloured terracotta floors, wooden-beamed ceilings and original fireplaces make up the backdrop, whilst large lounge chairs, antique rugs and linen-laden four-poster beds, all in different shades, give a unique ambience to each room. You can choose between classic, superior or an apartment equipped with a small kitchen. All rooms come with a private patio and every option is sublime.
Outside further wonder greets the guests. The gardens and grounds, reached by a series of cobblestone passages, are alive with fragrant shrubs and flowers. You will sit and sip your spumante under cascades of sweet-scented wisteria, hanging from the hamlet’s many pergolas, or meander down a vine-clad alcove and take a leap into the turquoise waters of the t-shaped pool. When you resurface, the view onto the estate’s stretch of olive groves, home to an almighty 1200 trees, will have you pondering what extra-virgin drizzled delights are to be on the day’s menu ahead. Breakfast, lunch and dinner, catered by the Borgo’s established restaurant and served to you under yet another picturesque pergola, are indeed feasts to fantasize over. Using organic ingredients, sourced from local farms, the food is fresh, light and tantalisingly tasty.
If you are not lapping up the sun whilst lounging poolside or continuing the pampered life at the wellness centre, where both massages and yoga classes are available on request, you can partake in the list of adventure-packed activities the resort has to offer. Discover Poreta on a four-legged friend and roam its forests on donkey or horse. Dogs too come to the aide, leading the way with their noses at the ready, in truffle-hunting excursions around the neighbouring hills. For those who wish to further pursue their culinary curiosities, in-house cooking lessons and olive tasting tours are a mouth-watering must.
The resort’s close vicinity to some of Italy’s most beloved cities and towns (Spoleto, Assisi and Perugia, to name but a few) allows for easy, art-packed and fun-filled day trips away. So, what are you waiting for? Get booking, start packing and come visit Borgo della Marmotta. Umbria awaits.
