Italian Paranoia Handbook

How to avoid the dreaded colpo d’aria and congestione, and prepare for battle against cambio di stagione.

A breakfast tray with pancakes, syrup, jam, coffee on a rumpled white-sheeted hotel bed; visible hotel logos in soft light. A breakfast tray with pancakes, syrup, and berries sits on a white bed; Hotel d’Inghilterra Roma logo appears on the right.

DO NOT jump into the water after a meal (DO wait at least a couple of hours)

DO NOT eat peppers or onions as you will most likely not be able to digest them

DO NOT leave the house with wet hair (doing otherwise may cause severe cervicale, or neck stiffness)

DO NOT drink too much or you will get male al fegato (Italians have the biologically exceptional power to feel pain in their liver)

DO NOT run around and sweat! But if you do, cover up immediately after, otherwise you’ll get a chill and catch a cold

DO prepare adequately for the cambio di stagione, a time of year that may cause dizziness, nausea, and exhaustion

DO NOT (this one is the worst of all!) ever find yourself under direct currents of cold air, which will surely lead to the maledetto (cursed) colpo d’aria!
