35 Under 35: Pilar Fogliati

Actress and Filmmaker, known for Odio il Natale (I Hate Christmas), Romantiche (Romantic Girls), and the Italian version of Inside Out 2

Age: 31

Where you’re from: Alessandria

Where you’re based: Rome

Tell us a bit more about your background and your current work:

After graduating from the Silvio d’Amico National Academy of Dramatic Art, I started acting in smaller roles. After various experiences also with radio, I decided I wanted to try writing a film. This led to my first work as a writer and director: Romantiche (Romantic Girls), a comedy film from 2022 that I also starred in as four different female characters.

Why did you choose to stay in Italy?

I have always envisioned my life and career in Italy. I never felt that I was not dreaming big by aiming for the Italian market rather than abroad; in fact, it would make me really proud to be able to continue working here without needing to go elsewhere.

What do you see for the future of the film industry in Italy?

I feel that a new generation of Italian filmmakers and producers is growing who are eager to change things. Thanks in part to examples from international markets, I think that they are now understanding and clearer about how audiences and the way of making films are changing.

What are the greatest obstacles and satisfactions that you face working in this country?

The biggest obstacles are the sense of precariousness of this craft, especially in this country. The biggest satisfactions are the ability to create something new. Writing is such a privilege for an actor; it provides the opportunity to look forward and stimulates me to find new forms of storytelling.
