Tell us a bit more about your background and your current work:

I am the founder of Landescape, a collective and agency dedicated to producing art at the intersection of performing arts, theater, and visual arts. As a collective, we curate the art direction for MACA (Museo Arte Contemporanea Alcamo). Additionally, we manage two artist residencies: Casa degli Artisti, a property confiscated from the Mafia located in the heart of Alcamo, and Posto Segreto, a regenerated space for common good in the rural area of the city. Through these initiatives, we strive to foster creativity and community engagement in Italy’s dynamic socio-political landscape.

Why did you choose to stay in Italy?

I chose to live in Italy for its unique climate and because it serves as a political laboratory. As nation-states in Europe face decline, Italy becomes a battleground for various forces vying for full sovereignty. This competition ranges from local municipalities to regional governments, national bodies to European institutions, and national firms to multinational lobbies. Italy exemplifies a new form of juridical particularism, characterized by different legal layers and diverse agencies. Despite the intense competition, niches of cooperatives and activists continue to make a meaningful impact, and I consider myself part of this movement. In doing this, my background as a lawyer and diplomat is crucial. 

What do you see for the future of the art industry in Italy?

The art industry in Italy, much like everywhere else, is heavily influenced by cash flow. Art is often confined by the precarious conditions of its production, constrained by the guidelines of its financial backers, the objectives of its producers, and the public relations strategies of its promoters. In this environment, art exists beyond its physical form, memory, and body. The only thing holding it together is often just barroom chatter and the relentless pursuit of new prizes, seasons, and trends dictated by economic interests.

What are the greatest obstacles and satisfactions that you face working in this country?

The greatest obstacles include low salaries, lack of public services, and pervasive corruption. These challenges have fostered a new form of conformism that echoes Fascist tendencies and is infiltrating all layers of society. However, satisfaction comes from working within this complex environment and striving to make a difference despite the hurdles. Being part of a community of cooperatives and activists who are committed to creating change provides a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
