Tenuta di Murlo

Family-Run Villas Perched Up High

book

Slam-bang in the centre of Italy lies the country’s greenest of all regions, Umbria

Nestled amongst its rolling hills and verdant valleys, spread over thousands of acres of lush land is our favorite Umbrian family-run estate of Tenuta di Murlo. Luxury holiday villas are now scattered amidst the flourishing fields, lakes, rivers and overflowing olive groves owned by the Carabba Tettamanti family for generations.

Originally medieval farmhouses, the tenants began to relocate to bigger towns and cities and left their dwellings, of which there were a staggering eighty in total, desolate and in disrepair. That is until current owners and decorators of dreams, Alessio and Carlotta Carabba took matters into their own hands and began to restore, refurbish and revitalise the most magnificent premises Tenuta di Murlo has to offer.

Today eight villas, two cottages, and a handful of exquisite rooms are available to rent throughout the year. The villas can accommodate a range of four to twenty people and are each equipped with private pools, panoramic terraces, and gated gardens

The villas include Castiglione Ugolino, a large and ancient castle and adjoining church that perches high up on a hill with its original 11th Century bell tower looming up against the blue Umbrian skies and pastel sunsets. The equally mesmerising Villa San Salvino is a renovated 13th Century church, its history revealed by its old stone walls and original terracotta tile floors. A frescoed alcove, which once held holy water, remains intact on one wall to this day. Villa Torre, with its own roof terrace, was rebuilt on the ruins of a medieval defence tower and has breath-taking views over the wooded valleys below. The latest renovation, Villa Molinella, is the ideal home for unrestricted relaxation and extreme privacy; views from atop are replaced with those of your own crystal clear river, private outdoor sauna, wooden hot tub and indoor secret pool with views of its own. An enchanted, special villa, immersed in the greenery you’ll often be visited by fawns and magical creatures. A feast for the eyes, body and mind, made to disconnect and reconnect with yourself, your surroundings and your loved ones.

Vacationers will unwind: bathing and revelling both in their spectacular surroundings and in the beautiful interiors that Carlotta, a true force to be reckoned with, has so carefully curated. Rustic traditions are blended with contemporary touches and comforts, with each villa, cottage and room boasting its own unique character.

While the picture-perfect accommodation may prove hard to leave, the beautiful estate and all that it offers is a world of discovery in itself. There is a farm, an apiary and stretches of sun-baked vineyards. Guests can row boats on the lake, fish, paddleboard, trek and mountain bike. You will pause and delight in the local cuisine at Il Caldaro, the Estate’s fine dining and celebrated restaurant. For those who wish to further their culinary pursuits, request cooking lessons, wine tastings and truffle hunting guided by the estate’s dogs.

In the family’s homes, you feel the unique balance of luxury and lightness; be yourself, not observed or judged, enjoy the simple pleasures of a region whose beauty has yet to be fully discovered. They are a family focused on the true meaning of family, spending their time between Tenuta di Murlo and their home in Rome. You’ll recognize them from their smiles, their warmth and laid back energy when you see them at their large table at Il Caldaro. They will make you feel perfectly comfortable and in the right place from the first instant.

Whether it’s a romantic getaway for two or a gathering of the closest friends, for parties, celebrations and wedding receptions, the Estate is the ultimate haven. A heaven on earth, there is really no place quite like the Umbrian paradise of Tenuta di Murlo.

A few segreti (secrets) from Alessio and Carlotta:

Gubbio — one of the most outstanding medieval towns in Umbria if not Italy. Only thirty minutes from the Tenuta.

Abbazia Di Monte Corona — an abbey founded in 1008, situated in the Tiber valley, at the foot of Monte Corona.

Osteria a Priori — a superb trattoria, a short 20 minute drive away. A place that showcases passion and care for local food and wine.
